How to choose the right board for your surf level
The right surfboard makes a huge difference to how quickly you progress and how much fun you have. Too small and you will struggle to catch waves; too advanced and every session feels like a fight. This guide breaks down the main board types, how to match one to your level, and what to think about whether you are renting for a few days or buying your first board.
Surfboard types, by level
Foam boards (soft-tops)
The best starting point for absolute beginners. The soft, high-volume construction floats well, catches waves easily and is far safer if the board hits you. Forgiving and stable, foamies make those first sessions much less frustrating.
Longboards (9'+)
Long, buoyant and stable, longboards are ideal for beginners and for anyone who loves smooth, gliding rides in smaller waves. The extra length makes paddling and wave-catching easy and gives you a steady platform to find your feet.
Funboards / mini-mals (6'6"–9')
A hybrid between a longboard and a shortboard. Funboards keep much of the stability and easy paddling of a longboard but add maneuverability, which makes them the natural next step for surfers moving from beginner to intermediate.
Fish boards (5'–6'6")
Shorter and wider with extra volume, fish boards generate speed in smaller, weaker waves. They suit intermediates who want a lively, playful board for everyday Algarve conditions.
Shortboards (5'–7')
Built for performance. Shortboards are less buoyant and harder to paddle, but in return they turn sharply and handle steeper, more powerful waves. Best left until you are a confident intermediate or advanced surfer.
How to choose the right board
- Skill level: beginners should prioritise volume and stability (foam boards and longboards), then step down to funboards and shortboards as their skills grow.
- Body weight and height: heavier surfers need more volume to float and paddle efficiently, so size up accordingly.
- Wave conditions: longboards and funboards shine in small, gentle waves; shortboards come into their own when the surf is bigger and more powerful.
- Fitness and paddle strength: if your paddling is not yet strong, more volume will help you catch waves and enjoy the session.

New or used?
We stock both new and used surfboards for sale, plus a full rental range. New boards give you the latest shapes and materials; used boards are a smart, lower-cost option for beginners who are not ready to invest yet. Every used board we sell is inspected so you know it is in good, rideable condition.
Renting vs buying
If you are visiting Lagos or still finding your level, renting is the easy choice — you can try different boards as you improve, and we will swap your board if the swell changes. Once you are surfing regularly and know what you like, buying your own board (and the right wetsuit) starts to make sense.
Frequently asked questions
What size surfboard should a beginner get?
Most beginners learn fastest on a high-volume foam board or a longboard of 8 feet or more. The extra float makes paddling and catching waves much easier.
What is the best surfboard for the waves in Lagos?
For everyday Algarve conditions, a funboard or fish gives intermediates speed and fun in smaller waves, while beginners are best on a foamie or longboard. Bigger west-coast days reward a shortboard for confident surfers.
Should I rent or buy my first surfboard?
Rent while you are learning so you can try different boards and sizes. Buy once you surf regularly and know your preferred shape.
