Top surf spots in Lagos & Algarve
Lagos sits in one of the most surf-rich corners of Europe. Within a short drive you can go from gentle, sandy beginner beaches right in town to fast point breaks and exposed west-coast swell magnets. The catch is that no single spot works every day — wind and swell direction decide where the surf is good. This is our local guide to the best surf spots in and around Lagos, what each one suits, and when to go.
Quick facts: surfing in Lagos
- Best season: September to April for size and consistency; summer is smaller and ideal for beginners.
- Water temperature: roughly 15–20°C through the year — a 3/2mm wetsuit covers most of it, 4/3mm in winter.
- Two coasts in reach: the sheltered south coast around Lagos, and the powerful west coast 30–60 minutes away.
- Beginner-friendly home beaches: Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, both minutes from the town centre.
- Boards & wetsuits: rent everything from the shop and we will match you to the conditions.
Surf spots on the south coast (in and near Lagos)
Meia Praia
Lagos's longest beach stretches almost 5km from the marina to the Alvor estuary, with multiple peaks spread along the sand. It usually carries smaller, forgiving waves that are perfect for beginners, but a solid south or southeast swell can turn on bigger, faster sections for improvers. Best with a south/southeast swell and northwest winds. The western end near Praia de São Roque is the local favourite. About 5 minutes from the centre.
Porto de Mós
A short drive south of town, Porto de Mós offers both a sandy beach break that is great for beginners and a reef on the western side that peels into longer, mellow rides loved by longboarders. It comes alive on south swells or a bigger northwest swell with north winds. Dramatic cliffs and two beachfront restaurants make it an easy place to spend the day. About 5–10 minutes from Lagos.
Praia da Luz
In the village of Luz, this beach mixes a central sandy beach break suitable for beginners with reefs that throw up more challenging waves for intermediates. On rare big northwest swells a right-hand point break wakes up and offers long rides for advanced surfers. Pretty setting, easy parking, cafés on the front. About 10 minutes from Lagos.
Burgau & Salema
These two small fishing villages west of Luz have sheltered, gentle bays that are good fallbacks when the swell is too big elsewhere. Salema in particular picks up west and southwest swell and stays manageable, which makes it a quiet, beginner-friendly option away from the busier town beaches. Roughly 15–20 minutes from Lagos.
Surf spots on the west coast (a short road trip)
Zavial
East of Sagres, Zavial is one of the most rewarding spots in the area when it is on: a fast, sometimes barrelling point break alongside a beach break with several peaks. It favours intermediate and advanced surfers and works on northwest and west swells. The clear water and cliff backdrop are worth the drive on their own. About 25–30 minutes from Lagos.
Arrifana
Tucked inside the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Arrifana is the best-known learner beach on the west coast. A headland shelters it from north winds, so it stays surfable when the more exposed beaches are blown out, and on smaller days it is genuinely beginner-friendly. On bigger swells it has more punch and a reef for experienced surfers. About 45 minutes from Lagos.
Sagres beaches: Mareta, Tonel & Beliche
The cluster of beaches around Sagres face different directions, so there is almost always something rideable whatever the wind is doing. Mareta is the most sheltered and the friendliest for beginners; Tonel and Beliche are more exposed and pull in bigger, more powerful surf for confident surfers. About 40 minutes from Lagos.
Amado & Bordeira (Carrapateira)
Further up the west coast, Amado and Bordeira are consistent beach breaks that catch swell when the south coast is flat. They handle all levels depending on the day and are popular with surf schools, so expect company at the main peaks. About 50–60 minutes from Lagos.

When to surf in Lagos
The prime season runs from September to April, when north Atlantic swells bring more powerful, consistent waves. Summer (June–August) tends to be smaller and cleaner — less exciting for advanced surfers, but exactly what you want when you are learning or rebuilding confidence. Whatever the month, checking the swell and wind the night before will tell you whether to stay on the south coast or make the trip west.
What to ride and wear
Water temperatures sit between about 15°C and 20°C, so a full 4/3mm wetsuit keeps you comfortable for longer sessions through most of the year; a 3/2mm is plenty in high summer. For boards, beginners are best on volume and stability while stronger surfers can drop down. If you are unsure, our guides to choosing the right board for your level and choosing the right wetsuit break it down, or just rent a board and wetsuit from the shop and we will set you up for the day's conditions, roof straps included.
Surf etiquette & safety
- Watch for rip currents, especially on bigger swells — they are strongest at exposed west-coast beaches.
- Respect the locals and follow right-of-way: the surfer closest to the peak has priority.
- If you are new to a spot, sit and watch for a few minutes to read where the waves break and where people paddle out.
- Beginners are safest on the gentle, sandy-bottomed town beaches before heading west.
