From our surf shop on Rua Candido dos Reis in the Old Town, we've been running outdoor activities in Lagos since 2009. Kayak tours and stand-up paddleboarding through the Ponta da Piedade sea caves, surf lessons at Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, catamaran cruises and dolphin-watching trips toward Benagil Cave, plus coasteering in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park out toward Sagres, e-bike tours into the Algarvian hills, wakeboarding, e-jetboard riding, and the Booze Cruise Lagos.

Water is warmest in September, after the long summer. Air peaks in August. May and September are the months we send people who want to be in the water without August crowds or August prices.

Lagos is a playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. The best outdoor activities here include surf lessons at Meia Praia, stand-up paddleboarding tours through the caves of Ponta da Piedade, and kayak tours to explore hidden beaches and grottos. May and September are the locals' favourite months: warm air, ocean already (or still) warm enough for water activities, fewer crowds, and prices ease off either side of peak summer. Air temperature peaks in August; water temperature peaks in September after the long summer. Surfing is best October–March when swells are bigger; kayak, SUP and catamaran tours run April–October with the calmest sea in May and September. Coasteering is comfortable when the water is at least 18 °C (May–October). E-bike tours, surf lessons, and dolphin watching run year-round.
The easiest route from Lagos is a guided boat tour from Marina de Lagos. Speedboat tours reach Benagil Cave in about 30 minutes across roughly 11 nautical miles. From Lagos itself, kayak and SUP tours visit the closer Ponta da Piedade sea caves; the Benagil Cave specifically is best reached by boat departure from Lagos or by driving the A22 east, exiting at Carvoeiro, and continuing to Benagil beach (about 30 minutes). Public transport works but is slower: bus from Lagos to Lagoa, then a taxi to Benagil (around two hours total). Booking a guided cruise from Lagos is by far the simplest option.
Most activities are super accessible price-wise. A kayak tour runs at €35 and includes a guide, snorkeling gear, and support boat. Catamaran cruises start at €39, and stand-up paddleboarding is also great value for a full 3-hour tour. For adrenaline, there's wakeboarding and e-jetboard riding, which cost more but offer next-level experiences. Don't forget, you also get 10% off in our shop when you book any activity.

If you want to level up the energy, e-jetboarding is the move. You're basically flying over the water on a motorised board. For more traditional water sports, wakeboarding is a crowd favorite, and windsurfing offers a mix of speed and skill that's super rewarding once you get the hang of it.
If you're planning a relaxed day with your partner, the Golden Coast catamaran cruise is a no-brainer. You'll sail past beautiful cliffs and fishing villages with a drink in hand. For sunrise vibes, book the SUP cave tour and paddle through the caves before anyone else is out. You could also go dolphin watching together or take a private surf lesson for something a little more active.
Yeah, you can kayak most of the year, but the sweet spot is between April and October. That's when the ocean is calmer and the weather's perfect for exploring.
