Best outdoor activities in Lagos, Portugal: Surfing, Kayaking & more with Jah Shaka Surf
Lagos is one of the best basecamps in Portugal for getting outdoors. Sunshine most of the year, dramatic cliffs, golden beaches and an easygoing pace make it a magnet for surfers, adventurers and anyone who would rather spend their holiday in the water or on a trail than by a pool. As a surf shop and booking hub in the heart of the old town, we help visitors line up the right experiences with trusted local operators. Here is the full rundown of what you can book through us in and around Lagos.
How booking works
We are an independent surf shop and the local booking point for a wide range of activities run by certified local operators and partner schools. You send a request, the operator confirms availability, you pay, and you are set. Every booking also unlocks 10% off in the surf shop that week, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Check each activity page for current prices and meeting points.
On the water
Surf lessons
Whether it is your first time standing up or you are sharpening your turns, the certified local schools we partner with run daily surf lessons in Lagos for every level, with board, wetsuit and beach transport included. There are group lessons, one-to-one private lessons, and kids' lessons on smaller foam boards. Prefer to go on your own? Rent a board and we will match it to the conditions.
Kayak tours of Ponta da Piedade
One of the must-do experiences in Lagos. Kayak tours glide along the coastline and weave through the famous grottos and sea caves of Ponta da Piedade, reaching hidden coves you cannot get to on foot. Calm, scenic and suitable for complete beginners.
Stand-up paddleboarding
Easier to pick up than surfing and a beautiful way to explore the cliffs and caves. SUP tours are especially magic in the early morning light before the crowds arrive, and you can also rent a board to explore at your own pace.
Coasteering
For an adrenaline hit, coasteering combines cliff jumps, sea-cave swims and rock scrambles along the rugged Costa Vicentina, all with certified guides. Options for adults and kids.
E-jetboarding
Surfing with a motor: e-jetboard riding on flat, calm water needs no waves and no experience — after a short briefing you are gliding across the surface at speed.
Kitesurfing, windsurfing & wingfoiling
The Algarve's wind makes it a great place to learn wind sports. Try kitesurfing in a beginner-friendly lagoon, or windsurfing and wingfoiling at one of Europe's best locations for both.
More on the water
There is also cable wakeboarding, year-round skimboarding, scuba diving trips and PADI courses, plus surf guiding and video analysis for intermediate and advanced surfers who want to find better waves and improve faster.
On a boat
Grotto tours
No trip to Lagos is complete without seeing Ponta da Piedade from the water. Grotto boat tours cruise past the sandstone cliffs and into the sea-carved caves and tunnels.
Dolphin watching
Head offshore on a dolphin watching tour to spot wild dolphins on a coastal safari — one of the most memorable boat trips on the Algarve.
Catamaran cruises & the Booze Cruise
For a relaxed afternoon, a catamaran cruise sails the coastline at an easy pace. If you are in more of a party mood, the 18+ Booze Cruise brings a live DJ, swim stops and unlimited drinks.
On land & off-road
E-bike & e-dirtbike tours
Swap the car for two wheels. E-bike tours follow the coast from Lagos towards Burgau and Cabanas Velhas, or head inland to villages like Barão de São João. For something with more bite, near-silent e-dirtbike tours take you off-road through Algarve forests and hills, with routes for beginners through to advanced riders.
Jeep tours, mountain biking & hiking
Explore the backcountry on a 4x4 jeep tour, ride the natural parks and dirt roads by mountain bike, or lace up for a guided west coast hiking adventure along the wild Costa Vicentina.
Horse riding, rock climbing & skydiving
Ride through the countryside on a horse-riding trip, test yourself on some of Europe's best crags with rock climbing (sport climbing, bouldering and deep-water soloing), or go all out and skydive over the coast on the highest tandem jump in Portugal.
Wine tasting
For a slower afternoon, a guided wine tasting tours a local vineyard and pours you the Algarve's lesser-known wines.
Why book with Jah Shaka
We are not a faceless booking site — we are an independent surf shop that has been part of Lagos since 2009, run by people who surf and explore this coast every week. We know which operators are good, which activities suit which conditions, and how to put together a few days that actually work. Come by the shop, tell us what you are after, and we will help you build the trip.
