It's the question we hear most across the counter in Lagos: "How many lessons will it take before I can actually surf?" There's no single number — it depends on your fitness, balance, and how at home you feel in the water — but after years of booking beginners onto the local beaches, we can give you a realistic picture. Lessons themselves are run by the certified local surf schools we partner with; our job is to match you to the right one and the right break for the day.

The short answer

Most people stand up and ride their first whitewater wave in their very first lesson. To get to the point where you can paddle for and catch unbroken (green) waves on your own, plan on 5–7 group lessons, or 3–4 private lessons. Feeling genuinely confident — catching green waves, turning, reading the ocean — usually takes 10–15 lessons combined with practice in between.

Group lessons: lesson by lesson

Lessons 1–2: the foundation

The first sessions start on the sand before anyone paddles out. With a certified instructor you'll cover the basics that make everything else possible:

  • Paddling & positioning — moving efficiently and lying balanced on the board.
  • The pop-up — the technique for getting to your feet.
  • Safety & surf etiquette — staying safe and sharing waves with others.
  • Your first wave — most beginners ride whitewater on day one.

Expect to fall a lot at this stage. That's normal, and it's how the muscle memory builds.

Lessons 3–5: building real skills

Once the basics click, the focus shifts to catching unbroken waves and surfing with more control:

  • Popping up smoothly and staying balanced through the ride.
  • Improving your stance for longer, steadier rides.
  • Starting to turn the board.
  • Reading the ocean — where to sit and which waves to go for.

Most beginners start catching green waves after their fifth to seventh lesson, especially with a bit of practice between sessions. Lessons run daily — see times and book a surf lesson in Lagos here.

Private lessons: the fast track

If you want to progress quickly, private lessons are the most efficient route. With one instructor focused entirely on you, there's no waiting your turn and the coaching is tailored to exactly what you need. As a rule of thumb, you'll cover in 3–4 private lessons what often takes 5–7 in a group. They suit people short on time, nervous beginners who want extra reassurance, or improvers working on a specific skill like catching green waves or turning. Have a look at private surf lessons if that sounds like you.

Can you learn to surf in a week?

For most people, yes — at least to a satisfying beginner level. A week of daily lessons gives you the 5–7 sessions that get the average beginner standing up and catching unbroken waves, with the bonus that you're in the water on consecutive days while it's all still fresh. Lagos is well suited to a learn-to-surf week: there's a beginner-friendly beach working on almost any day of the year, so lessons rarely get cancelled.

Where you'll learn

The instructor picks the beach with the friendliest conditions on the day — wave size and wind change daily, so flexibility matters. Meia Praia and Porto de Mós, both right by Lagos, are the go-to beginner beaches thanks to their gentle, sandy-bottomed waves. When the south coast is flat or blown out, lessons often head to Arrifana on the west coast, one of the most consistent beginner spots in the Algarve. What's included and what to bring

Your lesson booking covers the surfboard, wetsuit, and transport to the chosen beach, plus instruction from the partner school. You just need to bring:

  • Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit
  • A towel and a change of clothes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen for your face and the back of your neck
  • Water to stay hydrated

If you'd rather surf on your own afterwards, you can rent a board and wetsuit from the shop, and we'll help you pick something that matches your level and the day's conditions.

How much do surf lessons in Lagos cost?

Group lessons start at around €60, with private one-on-one coaching costing more for the dedicated instructor time. Prices vary by season and by how many sessions you book together, so check the current rates and packages on the surf lessons page. Remember that gear and beach transport are already included — there are no hidden hire fees on top.

Does age matter?

Not really. We've booked complete beginners well into their sixties, and surfing is something you can keep improving at for the rest of your life. Children are welcome too — kids' surf lessons use smaller foam boards and keep group sizes low so younger surfers get plenty of attention.
