How to choose the right wetsuit for your surfboard rental
A good wetsuit matters just as much as the right board. Get the fit and thickness right and you stay warm, comfortable and free to paddle; get it wrong and a cold, baggy or overly tight suit can ruin a session. Here is how to choose the right wetsuit size and thickness for surfing in the Algarve, plus how to look after it so it lasts.
Getting the fit right
A wetsuit should fit like a second skin — snug everywhere without restricting your movement. Too loose and cold water flushes through and chills you; too tight and you cannot paddle comfortably. To find your size, measure your height, your weight (in the morning is most consistent), your chest at its widest point, and your natural waistline without holding your breath in.
Sizing varies between brands, so always check the specific brand's chart. If you fall between sizes, go for the larger one for comfort and easier movement. Men's and women's suits are cut differently, so stick to the right category. When you rent from us, we will help you try a few on so the fit is right before you hit the water.

Wetsuit thickness and water temperature
Thickness is measured in millimetres, such as 3/2mm — the first number is the torso, the second the limbs. Match it to the water:
- 3/2mm — warmer months, water around 15–20°C. Our most popular summer rental.
- 4/3mm — spring and autumn, water around 10–15°C.
- 5/4mm — winter sessions, water around 5–10°C.
In the Algarve a 3/2mm covers most of the year, with a 4/3mm better through the cooler months. If you are renting, we will always hand you the right thickness for the day's conditions — see our guide to the local surf spots and seasons for what to expect month to month.
Caring for your wetsuit
- Rinse with fresh water after every session to wash out salt and sand that degrade the neoprene.
- Dry it inside out in the shade and out of direct sunlight, which weakens the material.
- Never machine-wash or tumble-dry. Hand wash only, with a wetsuit cleaner if it needs a deeper clean.
- Store it flat or on a wide hanger — thin hangers and folding cause creases and cracks.
Frequently asked questions
What thickness wetsuit do I need in the Algarve?
A 3/2mm is ideal in summer (water 15–20°C), a 4/3mm in spring and autumn, and a 5/4mm for cold winter sessions.
Should a wetsuit be tight?
Yes — snug like a second skin, with no loose gaps for water to flush through, but not so tight it restricts paddling. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.
Do I need my own wetsuit to surf in Lagos?
No. You can rent a wetsuit and board from the shop, and we will fit you with the right size and thickness for the day.
